The Australasian Housing and Land Economics Initiative (AHLEI) brings together researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to advance the understanding of land use dynamics and policy across Australia and New Zealand.
Our mission is to foster collaborative research that informs evidence-based land use policy, promotes knowledge exchange across disciplines, and builds a network of expertise spanning the Australasian region.
AHLEI serves as a platform for interdisciplinary dialogue on urban development, land use policy, environmental planning, and the complex interactions between land markets, regulation, and outcomes.
Competitive Urban Land Markets
Land markets in Australia and New Zealand are uncompetitive. Development rights are rationed, land transactions and use changes are high-friction, and opportunity has become artificially scarce. This artificial scarcity, created by policy, is a key barrier to growth and innovation.
AHLEI's inaugural conference will invite papers and presentations on the regulatory, financial, and fiscal tools required to enable more competitive urban land markets across Australian and New Zealand cities.
We are interested in papers on financing constraints, infrastructure pricing, regulatory distortions, and other subjects focused on material ways to improve our cities in the 21st century and beyond.
Details on submissions, dates, and Melbourne-based venue will be announced later in 2026. Register your interest below to be notified.
